I am thankful to blood donors because...

My story begins nearly 3 1/2 years ago. I am a neonatal RN in the NICU. Pregnant with my fourth child my blood pressure got dangerously high at 33 weeks. My doctor delivered her by emergency c-section. She weighed 4lbs. 10 oz. and was taken to the NICU where my friends and co-workers would care for her as she grew and learned to eat. I however took a turn for the worse and developed serious complications a few hours after delivery. I went into HELLP syndrome-an obstetric complication characterized by Hemolysis Elevated liver enzymes and Low Platelet count. An ultrasound revealed a large hematoma and my blood counts took a critical fall. My nurses would give me my first four units of blood and quickly move me to the ICU. I was taken to surgery and by then my liver had ruptured. I was losing blood as fast as they could replace it.

After several surgeries and over 100units of blood the bleeding finally ceased. My blood counts began to return to normal limits. Upon hearing my story donors lined up at our local blood center and mobile units to donate. My name went on prayer lists all over the country and people began to pray for a miracle. I spent 4 weeks in the hospital before returning home to my family. Lauren Brielle Garcia is now almost 4 years old and I can't help but think of the blood donors that saved my life everyday that I look at her. I am so thankful for the donors and those who prayed for us in our time of need!
